Hi I’m dr. Christian Northrop an OBGYN physician and authority on everything that can go right with your body and I want this to be your experience and I’m going to tell you how to do it if you’re like most people you’ve probably been raised on three square meals a day but did you know that there’s little evidence that shows that this is good for you like none in fact evidence shows that this way of eating may contribute to obesity and the diabetes epidemics what are the benefits of something called intermittent fasting they’re actually proven and in this video I will share with you how you can use intermittent fasting to improve your health and don’t worry it’s not starving it feels actually really good so what is it it means alternating cycles of eating and not eating the 16-hour ate method is the most popular in a 24-hour period you consume all your calories within an eight-hour window and fast for the other 16 hours now that may be too much for you there’s no rules for what foods you can eat although I would do a whole food diet you can drink non-caloric liquids during the fast period and interestingly enough once your body gets used to it hunger is usually not an issue because the body will adjust so why does it work our bodies were actually designed for intermittent periods of fasting humans have been fasting for centuries it’s a necessity ancestors didn’t have access to food 24/7 and there are religious and spiritual reasons every religion has a fasting period now when sick humans and animals instinctively fast they don’t feel like eating the primary reason to do intermittent fasting is it works to improve your life it lowers insulin levels remember it takes 12 hours of not eating for the body to clear its stores of glycogen or stored sugar in the liver and also for the insulin levels to lower to zero intermittent fasting lowers your blood sugar and it increases growth hormone which is the youth hormone what are the benefits of intermittent fasting it can help you lose weight studies show that it has the same benefits as calorie restriction even when you don’t restrict calories it may stimulate your sympathetic nervous system which helps you stay alert while being more resistant to stress it helps shift your body from burning sugar to burning fat for fuel fat is converted to ketones for more efficient energy it can also reduce inflammation fasting has been shown to lower inflammation markers in your body CRP il-6 cytokines and so on and it doesn’t feel like a diet because it’s not a diet there’s no deprivation and there are studies that show other proven benefits cellular repair or removal of waste from cells is improved with fasting it’s called otaku G it increases the metabolic rate I know you’ve probably heard if you do fasting it lowers your metabolic rate not true it increases it it reduces risk factors that contribute to heart disease it reduces blood pressure total and LDL cholesterol blood triglycerides lower inflammatory markers lower it may help prevent cancer and can reduce the effects of chemotherapy it may even stave off depression by increasing what’s called brain derived neurotrophic factor B D and F it may delay the onset of Alzheimer’s and reduce the severity of other neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s and Huntington’s chorea so there are easy ways to start fasting one of the very easiest ways is to simply extend the hours between your last meal at night and your first meal the next day start with 12 hours so stop at 7:00 at night begin eating at 7:00 in the morning try the 16-8 method for a while skip breakfast restrict your daily eating period to 8 hours just see what happened dr. Jason Fong eats dinner with his family that’s it or you can eat between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. fast for 16 hours between the 7 p.m. and the 11:00 a.m. try fasting for 24 hours just do this once a week no more than two times per week and another example fast from dinner one day until dinner the next day or on two non-consecutive days of the week eat only 500 to 600 calories and eat normally the other five days there’s so many ways to do intermittent fasting start simple and just try it by the way I’ve learned breakfast is not the most important meal of the day sometimes you’re going to do better if you do the fasting so for more inspirational tips visit my blog explored dr.
