Hi I’m Bob Shrum physical therapist and today Brad we’re gonna talk about why should you measure your hand grip strength and how do you do it at home.

The first thing you can do is use is a dynamometer, it costs about two hundred eighty bucks so we don’t expect that you’re gonna use this but you squeeze on it and it makes the needle move when you measure grip strength you want to do the same every time cuz you’re gonna establish a baseline good consistency. Keep your elbow at a right angles or always and at your side, squeeze with one hand.

Why are you gonna want to measure your grip strength? As far as in therapy I like I always do it after an injury whether it’s a shoulder elbow hand or wrist, it’s a good time to measure it to see where it is and then measure it a week later and see how it’s coming on. If you’ve had carpal tunnel sure or if you have it now even it’s an indicator he’s show how much weaker the one side I’d be an indication it’s time for surgery or you know it gives you that baseline so you can know if you’re getting stronge. If you’re starting a weightlifting program you know you want to get strong like bull and you want to check that would get some numbers going it’s a great way to do it, and if you’re a tennis player or a rock climber or a wrestler, these are all good things to give you a good baseline of where you are, to see if you’re getting stronger or not. if you’re you know if you’re worried about you’re having a neurological issue going on like carpal tunnel so there’s would be a good time to think that’s about it. We can say are the average 30 year-old grips so many pounds you know with this home thing we don’t have norms yet whether we should do some studies, there was an indicator to Brad if you actually suddenly have a drop in strength it might mean and you’re and you are a weightlifter it might mean you’re overtraining,
